The meat (beyond meat) of this article tries to convince you the reader about the significance of proper communication with your team and the stakeholders. To be able to discuss and share ideas with others in the appropriate language is a skill that every software engineer should hone. Moving further into the article, I discuss how the proper use of communication can help you become a better software engineer.

A little background about me: My name is Hasham. I am a software engineer for 2 years and I am based in Canada. In my infant years of experience, I have worked in a small team of 2 people to a 20 people team. Some of the team members are from different time zones. Some face a difference in culture and even differences in the level of fluency in spoken English. Keep these few factors in mind as they play a big role in learning to communicate better.

Let’s tackle the big question of why it is important to excel in communication to take your career to the next level? because to climb the ladder, you need to be efficient with your current responsibilities. To be efficient means to do less work and save as much time as possible. Having proper communication skills means saving time. Let me elaborate: we as engineers need to deliver projects on a set deadline. You must communicate with the stakeholders and assure them that you understand the project and clear out all the ambiguities and misunderstandings right away. The same goes with the teammate(s) you are working with remotely across the sea. Try to share your concerns and questions all at once so that you don’t waste time. Another reason for misunderstandings happens because the engineer either on the sending or receiving side lacks fluency in spoken English. To improve your speaking skills, practise talking in English and with time you will become excellent at communicating.
